It also emerged yesterday that he had forced his daughter Elisabeth to help him build the dungeon in which he later incarcerated her, and that he kept her on a dog leash for periods of her imprisonment.
"In my personal opinion, Josef Fritzl is mentally ill and therefore of diminished responsibility," said his lawyer, Rudolf Mayer.
"I believe that my client does not belong in prison but in a secure psychiatric unit."
While I do not suggest anybody should be handed over to psychiatrists - no matter what the crime ... the point here is that even though he is likely to suffer at their hands with their brutal regime ... the chances are that he will be let out within a year, allegedly cured.
This is what psychiatrists do all the time - fill people with mind altering drugs that destroy any last vestige of humanity, then say they are free to go because they can't do any more for them...
He should be entombed, in a very small cell, with no contact to anybody... but fundamentally he should be made to be responsible for his crimes ...a plea of insanity is a route out, from that responsibility.
